Eaton’s Advanced Water Heater Control Hot Water Assurance helps utilities prevent cold-water events, manage energy usage times and optimize rates to minimize energy costs.
Load curve shapes are changing as a result of Electric Vehicles (EVs), Photovoltaics (PVs) and energy efficiency technologies. As a result, utilities are seeing the need for increased water heater control times. Historically standard sized DR water heaters have been controlled up to 4 or 5 hours with few customer comfort issues. As the control times increase more customers will experience cold water events.
Eaton’s Advanced Water Heater Control Hot Water Assurance algorithm allows the controlling LCR to anticipate a customer's potential cold-water event, enabling it to downshift the control rate to match the customer usage. When the control event ends, the control rate of the entire population of controlled water heaters is downshifted rather than restored in order to flatten the secondary peak.
Our algorithms also include PV Load Support, allowing the utility to dispatch water heater energy usage to times with low load and high PV output and Time of Use (TOU) rate optimization, which allows the LCR to control the water heater and minimize the customer's water heater energy costs.
